Leah Johnson, a visionary leader in collegiate volleyball, commands the helm of the Michigan State volleyball program with an unparalleled blend of expertise, passion, and a proven track record of success.


In her second season guiding the Spartans, Johnson has already left an indelible mark, steering the team to a historic season marked by unprecedented achievements. Under her guidance, Michigan State notched a remarkable 13 wins, showcasing Johnson's ability to instill a winning culture and ignite a newfound energy within the program. Notably, the Spartans shattered attendance records, with a record-breaking 7,326 fans flocking to witness their prowess on the court.


Prior to her tenure at Michigan State, Johnson made waves as the head coach of the Illinois State program from 2017 to 2021. There, she orchestrated a remarkable run of success, leading the Redbirds to a remarkable 104-53 record and five consecutive postseason appearances, including four NCAA Tournament berths. Johnson's tenure at Illinois State was marked by a string of accolades, including multiple Missouri Valley Conference championships and numerous individual honors for her student-athletes.


Before her tenure at Illinois State, Johnson made significant contributions to collegiate volleyball during her six-year tenure as head coach at SIU-Edwardsville. Her impact extended beyond the court as she guided the Cougars through the transition from Division II to Division I, establishing a culture of excellence and resilience.


As a former standout student-athlete at Missouri State, Johnson brings a unique perspective to her coaching philosophy. Her illustrious playing career, coupled with her academic achievements, including recognition on the MVC Scholar-Athlete Team, underscores her unwavering commitment to excellence both on and off the court.


Johnson's journey in volleyball is a testament to her unwavering dedication and relentless pursuit of excellence. With a master's degree and a bachelor's degree from Missouri State, Johnson continues to inspire the next generation of athletes with her passion, expertise, and unwavering commitment to the game she loves.
